Inside Out: Meet the Little Voices Inside Your Head

By Erin

*I was invited as a guest of Disney to attend the press junket for purposes of this post*

Have you ever wanted to meet those little voices inside your head? Or do you ever look at someone and wonder what is going on inside their head? Well, in Disney-Pixar’s fifteenth film, “Inside Out” examines this very thought of what goes inside our head as we witness firsthand the turbulent mechanisms and dynamics of the five primary emotions driving an eleven year-old girl’s mind. At a recent press junket in Beverly Hills we were able to do just this as we got to sit down and chat with the creators and cast of Inside Out.

Director Pete Docter, Producer Jonas Rivera, and cast members Amy Poehler (“Joy,”) Bill Hader (“Fear,”) Mindy Kaling (“Disgust,”) Phyllis Smith (“Sadness,”) and Lewis Black (“Anger”) joined us for some very emotional fun, topics ranging from emotions, to Pixar, to Islands of Personality.

First we chatted with Director Pete Docter and Producer Jonas Rivera. Both have been with Pixar for over 20 years, and their love for creating movies shines through in Inside Out.

So how did the idea of “Inside Out” come to be?

Pete Docter  noticed that his daughter was going through some very emotional times, like all pre-teens do. She had just turned 11.

“I noticed my daughter growing up, being a little less goofy and wacky and funny and a little more shy and quiet because she had turned 11.  And at the same time, I was looking at different ideas for a film and thought about emotions as characters. The basic pitch that I gave to Jonas at first, and then ultimately John, was, “What if we have an 11-year-old girl who’s moved across the country, but she’s actually not the main character; she’s the setting, because inside her head are her emotions that help her deal with everyday life?” It was pretty much just that simple of a concept.  I didn’t really have a story yet.  That came from working with Josh Cooley and Ronnie del Carmen, all the amazing story talents that we have.  It slowly developed over the next four years.  But we all kind of know that, that it doesn’t have to be perfect.  We’re gonna make a lot of adjustments and refinements as we go.”

How did there come to be five emotions to go inside the head, rather than six or four?  Is there a mathematical reason for that?

Pete explained to us: “I pitched optimism, which is, we learned later, not really an emotion, and joy. I had fear and anger and some other ones, and we realized, man, we don’t really know anything about this.  So we did a lot of research, and that’s where this came from.  There is no consensus amongst scientists about how many emotions there actually are.  Some say 3; some say 27; most are somewhere in the middle.  We realized, well, we get to kind of make this up. We arrived at five, mainly because it’s a nice odd number.  It felt like a good crowd, enough contrast and conflict between them, but not so big that you’re, like, “Wait, who’s that again?  Schadenfreude?  Okay.  Lost track of −” so, if we were to represent all 27, I just − my brain was hurting, thinking of writing for all these characters. We ended up at these five, largely because of the work of Dr. Paul Ekman, who was one of the consultants on the show.  And he had originally, back in the ’70s, posited six.  It was our five, plus surprise.  And we felt surprise, as a cartoon, is probably fairly similar to fear.  So we jettisoned that one, and that’s how we ended up with the five.”

Do Pete and Jonas deliberately start out to make movies as a team or purposely like to make people cry?

Jonas had this to say: “We don’t sit around consciously going, “All right. Let’s make a great movie.” I mean, we hope that happens, obviously, but I think it’s just like, “What do we wanna see? What did we love seeing when we were kids? What do we wanna take our families to? What are we gonna be proud of? Let’s aim for that.”

Next, we had a hilarious chat with the voices inside the head of Inside Out.

Bloggers Getting Their Jam on With “Gotta Be Me” From Teen Beach 2 #TeenBeach2Event

Bloggers Getting Their Jam on With “Gotta Be Me” From Teen Beach 2

By Erin

Everyone, it’s time to get your jam on!  Teen Beach 2″ is creating waves and will be surfacing on the Disney Channel on June 26th! We’re already on our feet and dancing to the beat!  This was all part of the Inside Out Event that I attended earlier this week.”Teen Beach 2″ stars Chrissie Fit and Jordan Fisher attempted to teach 25  of us bloggers the dance to “Gotta Be Me,” one of the hit (and very catchy may I add!) songs from the new movie to celebrate the movie’s June 26, 2015 premiere at 8PM EST on the Disney Channel.

I’m sure you can tell, for those watching, this must have been a very interesting and hilarious sight to see 25 bloggers trying to learn a dance like this! I’m in the 2nd row here, 2nd from the right. From what I can tell here, I’ve at least got the same arm back as both Jordan and Chrissie do! Haha! There were no mirrors in the room, so if you were in the back of the room, it was really hard to see what was going on. We rotated what rows we were in every few minutes so that everyone got a chance to see the moves we *should* be doing.  We all get an A for effort I’d say. 😉

Jordan and Chrissie were both so sweet and patient with us. They really slowed the dance down for us  at 1/8 speed so we could learn it correctly. The dance scenes in the movie are very elaborate and beautiful to watch, but they are not hard to learn. I don’t think we captured that elaborate look for the dance, but we sure did have fun! It was only about 20 minutes or so, but it was a mini workout for sure with all the moving and turning and jumping around. We all had a blast, even if we were crashing into each other or stepping on toes, it was a good laugh. Jordan and Chrissie were very high energy and kept us on our toes the entire time, giving us encouragement to make it our own, and to be ourself and add some attitude to the dance. That IS the name of the song right? “Gotta Be Me” Makes sense…

Create Your Tomorrow ,Today with Tomorrowland! In Theaters NOW!

Create Your Tomorrow Today with Tomorrowland!

By Mary Lansing & Erin

Is it just me, or does Disney keep pulling out all the stops with their films? Whether its Big Hero 6, Into the Woods or all they’re accomplishing with The Marvel Universe, it can be hard to come up for air when so much pure awesome-ness is surrounding you at the movie theatre.

Their newest gem? Tomorrowland, hitting the big screen TODAY, May 22nd. I was treated to an advanced IMAX screening and let me tell you, it will not disappoint. Tomorrowland is easily my favorite part to visit at Disneyland, but what if a land where anything truly is possible existed? With a world of tomorrow’s happening every, single day.

That’s just what happens when we’re introduced to a young Frank Walker (later played by George Clooney). The era is mid 1960s, & this adorable young chap has taken a grueling long bus trek to enter The New York’s World Fair & show off his jetpack invention to the powers that be at this event. “The powers that be” is Mr. David Nix (Hugh Laurie), who is less than impressed at this boy in front of him, as he excuses him away, a little girl named Athena (Raffey Cassidy) sees some kind of magic in Frank, & offers him a mysterious pin, encouraging him to check out an attraction (I am not going to tell you, but I will just say: It’s an attraction we all know & love!). There, he is transported to a fantastic, not of this world place, where little Frank’s jetpacks seem like nothing compared to this city of Tomorrowland.

Fast forward to now, & we’re introduced to young rebel, Casey (Britt Robertson). Casey’s Dad (Tim McGraw) works at NASA but, alas, things are changing & his job is in jeopardy. Casey finds much of the current state of the world not good, & therefore does her own kinds of things to try to change that. When one of her antics lands her in jail, she soon discovers that she now has one of those mysterious pins, when her bail is posted & her belongings are returned. As you’ve probably seen in the trailers, just picking up this “T” pin, transports Casey to who knows where. Not one to let things slide, she next sets out on an adventure to discover more about this pin.

Luckily, it is then that Casey meets a young girl….I will let you guess who this is once again 😉 & thus, their own road trip begins in order for Casey to connect with the now-recluse Frank.

Visually, this film is outstanding. I cannot recommend enough to see & soak in all its beauty in IMAX. With so many twists & turns, I want to be careful not to give too much away. Director Brad Bird is certainly on the right path at securing his place in the world of the Director for futuristic, sci-fi films. Think no further than his last Disney collaboration, 2005’s The Incredibles. The dynamics of this cast is pure gold, as well. What continued to amaze me throughout the course of Tomorrowland, were the strong performances led by Robertson & Cassidy; these young women have the chops to not only hold their own among some of the film industry’s leading men, but are paving their path to become A list status, as well.

This also goes for Clooney. Always a superb performer, I do admit I wondered what it would be like seeing him play against such fresh, new talent. He absolutely shines, & the role of Frank Walker was made for him; word is this role was written for him, personally, & it shows.

Tomorrowland is playing everywhere today, & while it’s a great choice for the family, I especially recommend it for families with children over 12.

Enjoy!
