Is Aulani Worth It? The Ultimate Guide to Planning a Magical Summer Vacation at Disney’s Hawaiian Resort 🌺

By Erin

If you’ve ever wondered “Is Aulani really worth visiting?” The answer is a very magical yes.

Tucked along the stunning shores of Ko Olina on the island of Oʻahu, Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa blends Disney storytelling with authentic Hawaiian culture to create one of the most unique vacation destinations in the world.

Unlike a traditional Disney theme park vacation, Aulani is about slowing down, soaking up island life, and creating unforgettable family memories, all while still enjoying the thoughtful details and immersive experiences Disney is famous for.

From floating down a tropical lazy river to snorkeling with vibrant fish, meeting your favorite Disney characters in aloha shirts, and watching breathtaking Hawaiian sunsets over the Pacific, Aulani delivers a kind of magic that feels both relaxing and adventurous at the same time.

Whether you’re planning a summer family vacation, a couples getaway, or a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Hawaii, here’s why Aulani deserves a spot at the top of your travel list.

What Makes Aulani Different From Other Hawaiian Resorts?

One of the things that sets Disney’s Hawaiian resort apart is how deeply it honors the culture and traditions of Hawai‘i.

Disney partnered with local artists, historians, and cultural experts to make sure Aulani celebrates the stories of the islands rather than simply recreating a typical Disney resort.

You’ll see this throughout the property in:

• Hawaiian artwork and carvings throughout the resort
• Cultural classes and storytelling experiences
• Traditional island cuisine and ingredients
• Architecture inspired by Hawaiian history

The result is a resort that feels authentically Hawaiian while still delivering Disney magic.

Our Stay in a 2-Bedroom Villa at Aulani

One of the highlights of our stay at Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa was the 2-bedroom villa, which felt like our own little island home. With plenty of space to relax, a fully equipped kitchen, multiple bathrooms, and a lanai to enjoy the tropical air, it was perfect for families who need comfort and flexibility. The design beautifully blends Hawaiian culture with Disney magic, making every corner feel thoughtful and welcoming.

Having room for everyone to spread out, plus a washer and dryer for convenience, made our stay so easy, especially after long days at the pools, beach, or luau. For families, the villas strike the perfect balance of luxury, practicality, and togetherness, giving everyone a private space while still keeping family moments at the heart of the stay. These rooms can accomodate up to 9 people.

The Pools, Lazy River & Water Adventures Everyone Loves

At the heart of Aulani is Waikolohe Valley, an incredible outdoor water playground designed for all ages.

Some of the most popular experiences include:

Waikolohe Stream Lazy River

Digital Camera

Drift through lush tropical landscaping, waterfalls, and lava rock formations in one of the most relaxing lazy rivers you’ll ever experience.

Rainbow Reef Snorkeling Lagoon

A private snorkeling lagoon where guests can swim alongside hundreds of colorful tropical fish. This is an extra charge, but the length of stay access is totally worth it.

One-Day Access: $30 per adult (ages 10 and up); $25 per child (ages 9 and under)

Length-of-Stay Access: $50 per adult (ages 10 and up); $40 per child (ages 9 and under)

🎢 Volcanic Vertical Water Slide

Thrill seekers will love this twisting body slide that sends riders racing through a volcano-inspired lava tube.

Ko Olina Lagoon Beach

The calm waters of Ko Olina make this beach perfect for paddleboarding, swimming, and relaxing in the sunshine.

Disney Characters… With a Hawaiian Twist 🐭🌺

At Aulani, Disney character experiences feel more relaxed and personal than in the parks.

You might see Mickey Mouse strolling through the resort in an aloha shirt or run into Stitch near the pool.

Guests can also meet Moana, which feels especially fitting when you’re surrounded by the ocean that inspired her story.

For younger travelers, Aunty’s Beach House offers a supervised kids club with crafts, games, cultural activities, and character visits.

The Food at Aulani Is Surprisingly Incredible

Food lovers will quickly discover that Aulani is also a fantastic foodie destination. I need to do a separate post JUST on the food and all the sweet Mickey treats!

A few must-try spots include:

KA WA‘A – A Lū‘au

One of the most unforgettable experiences at Aulani is the chance to immerse yourself in the stories, flavors, and traditions of Hawaii is through an incredible evening celebration at the KA WA’A Luau. This lū‘au blends authentic Hawaiian culture with Disney storytelling, featuring a delicious island-inspired buffet, live music, hula dancing, and the thrilling fire-knife finale that lights up the night. Guests can also enjoy hands-on cultural activities before the show begins, making it a fun and meaningful experience for both kids and adults. It’s the perfect way to spend a magical Hawaiian evening under the stars while learning about the rich history and spirit of the islands.

AMA’AMA – Contemporary Island Cooking

An oceanfront restaurant serving fresh seafood and island-inspired cuisine with stunning sunset views.

Makahiki – The Bounty of the Islands

The Makahiki story comes to life through delectable food, local artwork, intricate stained glass, jewel-toned murals and dramatic lighting. Going to a lively character breakfast where Mickey waffles meet Hawaiian flavors is a must! Their dinner menu is delicious too.

Ulu Cafe

A market where you can enjoy breakfast, lunch or dinner at a poolside venue that offers fresh poke bowls, flatbread, sandwiches, hot meals and grab-and-go selections. You can take it to go to enjoy outside, on the beach or take it up to your room.

Little ‘Opihi’s Beachside Kiosk

Home to refreshing shave ice, the perfect treat after a sunny beach day.

Off the Hook

Relax and enjoy food and drinks in the covered lounge. Designed to resemble a Hawaiian fisherman’s seaside shack, with cowry-shell lures, shark-tooth knives, fishhooks and fish-shaped ku‘ulo stones once used as decoys.

Relaxation & Spa Experiences for Adults

While Aulani is amazing for families, adults can also enjoy peaceful escapes throughout the resort.

The standout experience is Laniwai, A Disney Spa, which features outdoor hydrotherapy gardens and Hawaiian-inspired spa treatments.

There’s also an adults-only infinity pool overlooking the ocean that is the perfect place to relax with a tropical drink.

Painted Sky: HI Style Studio for the Kids

One of the most magical moments of our trip to Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa was taking my niece to the Painted Sky: HI Style Studio. Girls and boys ages 3 to 12 can enjoy a fun fashion transformation with a talented stylist and, of course, a little pixie dust! My niece’s eyes lit up as she got to choose an outfit (a pink mermaid one of course) got her hair styled and her look refreshed for the KA WA‘A Lū‘au, making her feel like a true princess. The studio itself is a sophisticated yet playful space, with color-changing LED “rainbows” overhead and relaxing island music filling the room, creating the perfect atmosphere for kids to feel pampered, magical, and completely immersed in the spirit of aloha. She was having so much fun, she was dancing in her new mermaid fit, (that is also a bathing suit) in the dressing room. Make your appointment as soon as you can after you make your reservations for the Aulani as appointments do fill up FAST for this!

Cultural Experiences You Won’t Want to Miss

One of the most meaningful aspects of Aulani is how it celebrates Hawaiian culture through hands-on experiences.

Guests can enjoy:

🌺 Lei-making classes
🎶 Ukulele lessons
💃 Hula dancing demonstrations
🔥 Evening storytelling around the fire pit

These activities make your visit feel like more than just a vacation, they create a deeper connection to the spirit of the islands.

Is Aulani Worth It?

If you’re looking for a vacation that combines:

✔ Disney storytelling
✔ Hawaiian culture
✔ incredible food
✔ relaxing beaches
✔ unforgettable family memories

Then Aulani truly delivers a magical experience unlike any other resort in Hawaii.

It’s the kind of place where families reconnect, adventures unfold, and every sunset feels like the perfect ending to a beautiful day in paradise.

Our time at Aulani was truly one of those magical family trips that stays with you long after you return home. Experiencing the resort through the eyes of my niece made every moment feel even more special from splashing through the pools and lazy river to discovering hidden Menehune around the property and ending our days watching the sunset over the ocean. One of my favorite moments was watching her eyes absolutely light up when she was sprinkled with a little pixie dust and had her hair done at Painted Sky: HI Style Studio before the lū‘au. It meant so much to me to be able to give her that magical experience. There’s something incredibly special about how Aulani blends Disney magic with the beauty and culture of Hawai‘i, creating a place where both kids and adults can slow down, explore, and make unforgettable memories together. It was the kind of trip filled with laughter, adventure, and those little moments you wish you could bottle up forever, and I already know we’ll be dreaming about our next visit back to paradise. Are you dreaming of YOUR next Aulani vacation?
