Dreamworks Trolls

Dreamworks Trolls is on it’s way to theaters this Friday and I had the opportunity to screen the movie a little early and attend a special press junket held at DreamWorks Animation and 20th Century Fox a couple of weekends ago. We chatted with Justin Timberlake and Anna Kendrick and got a preview of the many things from the Trolls world that we can now experience for ourselves like some yummy frozen yogurt, their awesome songs, and some cool wigs so you can actually BE a troll yourself!

TROLLS

So what did I think of the movie? Trolls is a cute, colorful adventure inspired by the tall-haired troll dolls that first became popular in the 1960s. I remember having a lot of these as a kid, which was a big factor that drew me to this movie (besides Justin Timberlake lol).  Princess Poppy (Anna Kendrick) partners up with grumpy pessimist Branch (Justin Timberlake) to rescue her friends from the crazy troll-hungry Bergens. There are lessons they learn about inner happiness, never giving up, and being proud of who you are. The film has a very fuzzy, felted look to it, that filmmakers took a lot of time to create which softens some of the danger, but little kids are still likely to be scared by the greedy, hungry giant Bergens. Glitter farts of Poppy’s sparkly friend, Guy Diamond are sure to make viewers of all ages laugh, along with all of the catchy songs, the strong themes of friendship and empathy, and the fun characters. The messages are positive and easy to understand. Happiness is inside everyone, if you know where and how to find it. You shouldn’t have to change who you are to get someone to like you. Musical numbers are used to move the story along and have a lot of meaning to the storyline. Classics like “The Sound of Silence” enter at just the right moments and often at just the right time to make you chuckle. With all the colors, music, action, and glitter; there’s so much to look at and listen to all at once. This is a movie the whole family can enjoy.

Meet the Cast

After a very fun day full of good food, crafts, and previewing the Trolls items you will see below, we got to meet the cast and directors of the Movie Trolls. Here is a little bit of what they shared with us about the movie and the music.

We all wanted to know from Justin what were some of the unique challenges between doing the songs that are covers versus his own songs.

Justin Timberlake:  Well, every song was pretty situational, whether it be for a comedic purpose or dramatic purpose. So I think you really just kind of break down each moment and you know, at the end of the day it’s theatrical as well.  For instance, there were some great opportunities to write songs to use almost like you’re writing your own source music. The roller-skating scene to write the song for Ariana Grande, that worked out. I saw the scene and they had something else tempted in there and went back and sort of rethought that. But when you’re using a song like The Sound of Silence’, as soon as you hear those two opening, it’s so recognizable that immediately all the adults in the room laugh.  And then with something likeTrue Colors’, I can’t imagine actually having to write a song after hearing that in that scene and just it literally is like it worked so well. I’ll shut up now.

What attracted Anna to this particular project and was it different than any other musical element?

Anna Kendrick:  Well, I think music and animation, I grew up in an era when all animated films were musicals, so that made perfect sense to me. And I didn’t know that, when I signed on I didn’t know how much of it was going to be covers and that just made it even more fun. Because I already knew the words and stuff.  But, when I was recording Sounds of Silence’ I was like, “Oh my God, my dad is going to be so excited,” because we listened to this in the car when I was growing up. Singing these songs is just so cool. Like I can’t believe I get to do it.  So, I mean, I would say that because if Justin had been a part of it before I signed on that would have obviously been a huge factor. And so the fact that he came on after that I was like, “This is like getting better and better. Like is someone going to give me a Ferrari next? This is the best job I’ve ever had.”

Do you remember Trolls from back in the day? I remember having quite a few of them myself. I loved their crazy colorful hair and sparkly jeweled bellies. Many people all over the world (including myself) have been waiting for the big news that Trolls is coming this November, just in time to make the holidays a little brighter and to help you find your happy place to get in the spirit. Both kids and adults are going to love this colorful, music-filled comedy.

Find Your Happy Place November 4th!

From the creators of Shrek comes the most smart, funny, irreverent animated comedy of the year, DreamWorks’ Trolls. This holiday season, enter a colorful, wondrous world populated by hilariously unforgettable characters and discover the story of the overly optimistic Trolls, with a constant song on their lips, and the comically pessimistic Bergens, who are only happy when they have trolls in their stomach. Featuring original music from Justin Timberlake, and soon-to-be classic mash-ups of songs from other popular artists, the film stars the voice talents of Anna Kendrick, Justin Timberlake, Russell Brand, James Corden, Kunal Nayyar, Ron Funches, Icona Pop, Gwen Stefani, and many more.

Dreamworks Trolls-Press-Junket

I had the honor to sit in on an interview with the Director of Trolls, Mike Mitchell, Co-Director Walt Dohrn, Producer Gina Shay and the stars of Trolls, Justin Timberlake and Anna Kendrick. Director Mike Mitchell, who also directed DreamWorks’ SHREK, explained to us that this film has the kind of magic that both parents and kids will find themselves laughing at the same parts and sharing a love for both new and classic songs. What else did we learn?

Here are some of the fun facts we learned about Trolls!

  • The story development for Trolls is very different from Shrek. Trolls is not based on any previous story. They had a completely clean slate to work with for Trolls.
  • There is a theme of happiness that applies to everyone.  There’s a big idea here that we’re all born with happiness.  We just–sometimes we need someone to help us find it, but we’re all born with this ability to be happy.

  • A new kind of animation is used with the creation of this film. You will be able to see “texture” on the animation when you go to see the movie in 3D.
  • Trolls is the first film that Justin Timberlake is an Executive Music Producer for.

Justin-Anna-Trolls-Dreamworks

  • The movie has been created with original songs like, ‘Can’t Stop the Feeling’ but also includes many music adaptations from classics that we grew up listening to like: ‘True Colors’ and ‘The Sound of Silence.’
  • The music really helps to tell the story and is an integral part of the storytelling.

Justin Timberlake Trolls

  • +1,000 songs were picked out for Trolls. To make the final cut, besides being cleared to use the song, the song had to fit the story, fit the tone of the movie, and it had to have kind of this everlasting feel.

  •  Big challenges? Glitter!  The computer couldn’t understand the glitter. It’s a glitter taskforce, typing code. They thought the big challenge would be the hair because the hair does everything in this film. It changes color.  It changes shape.  It stretches like a monkey tail and it holds onto stuff.  But, it was the glitter that gave them the biggest challenge. Watch for Guy Diamond. That’s where the glitter is.

*We were invited as media to attend a sneak peek of Kung Fu Panda 3 and interview with the lovely Kate Hudson.*

Dreamworks has done it again! Returning with its biggest comedy adventure yet, Kung Fu Panda 3 returns, staring Kate Hudson as the voice of Mei Mei. The film will tell the story of Po’s (Jack Black) discovery of a secret panda village, including his long-lost father Li (Bryan Cranston).  Kate voices Mei Mei who is an aspiring ribbon dancer. On January 29th, Kung Fu Panda 3 is coming to theaters across the country.  Whether you want to see it with your kids or were a fan of the previous films, there are a ton of reasons to be excited about this movie.  We were lucky enough to get a sneak peek at Jack Black’s latest romp during a trip to Dreamworks Studios.  After the screening, we caught up with Kate Hudson (who does the voice of Mei Mei, a new character) in a round table interview to talk about the movie.

KUNF FU PANDA 3

“Mei Mei” the character that Kate Hudson is the voice for.

This was Hudson’s first time doing an animated film, and she was excited about the opportunity to try something different.  “Anybody who’s an actor or performer, you know, that’s what we love,” she said.  “The whole point is trying new things.”  She said a large difference between live and voice acting is the amount of hyperbole you’re allowed to put into the character, especially since you read lines alone in a room: “We just had to be so big and so huge.  And it was so much fun to do in a booth where you just to go there, and you go so far that you end up cracking yourself up.”

Her character, Mei Mei is a fellow panda who shows up in the movie when Po final finds his native town.  She is vibrant with a big personality that screams girl power.  “It’s sort of like I had that kind of confidence sometimes,” she said about Mei Mei.

This latest installment of the Kung Fu Panda franchise promises to offer a larger, grander experience than the previous two movies.  We get to meet Po’s biological father, and see a new panda village full of new, vibrant characters.  It will bring a whole new dimension to Jack Black’s lovable character.  This also means a bunch of A-list actors that will be added to the cast for this movie.  “The cast is insane,” said Hudson.  “Bryan Cranston, J.K. Simmons, it’s amazing!  It’s such a cool thing to be a part of.”  The cast also boasts Seth Rogan, Jackie Chan, Angelina Jolie and Dustin Hoffman.
